How do you make your regular Xbox 360 gamer profile have Xbox LIVE?

I am getting a Xbox 360 soon and I want to know after you make your gamer profile, how do you make it have Xbox LIVE in it?|||Just buy the 1 month, 3 months or 1 year xbox live gold membership and redem it on your profile, then it's gonna be a xbox live profile
